Introduction:
This is the biggest national park in Uganda with an area
of 3840sqkm.The river Nile divides the park into North and
South sectors and forms a Falls where it flows over the
western rift valley escarpment. Here the river is forced
through a seven metre gap in the rocks and cascades into
a boiling pot 43 metres below.
Attractions: Murchison Falls itself where
the 87 metre wide River Nile is forced through a 7 metre
clift in the rocks dropping to more than 43 metres below
with a thundering roar and a beautiful rainbow. Historical
sites are responsible for much of the park's appeal, it's
beauty and name.
The boat can stop at the foot of a trail which leads you
through dense forest to a natural viewing platform of boulders.
There is a 3 hours launch cruise to the bottom of the falls
from Paara which will be an unforgettable experience. Along
this 17 km Nile stretch you should view: elephants, buffaloes,
giraffes, lions, hippos, waterbucks, several antelope species,
a lot of birdlife and the tooth some Nile crocodile.

will begin and last for about 3hrs get back by mid noon,
later prepare to drive to Nyakalengija and preparations
for tomorrow’s early mountain climb. Dinner and overnight
at Ibanda Base camp at Nyakalengija.
Day 7:
Rwenzori Mounntains Central Circuit We arrive early at Nyakalengija
the Park Headquarters and Rwenzori Mountaineering Services
concession buildings, so as to have ample time to arrange
payment, rent equipment, select guides and porters. Begin
the hike by leaving the park headquarters at ( 5,400ft /
1,646m). It takes approximate 40 minutes to reach the park
boundary ( which can be pleasant half or one day for someone
not going farther). The trail then follows the Mubuku River
before reaching the Mahoma River after two and a half hours.
After crossing the river you will have a steep climb to
up to Nyamitaba hut
(2,652 m). Total time for an average hiker from Nyakalengija
to Nyabitaba is about 5 hrs. This is a substantial effort
for the first day. Slower hikers could take considerably
longer, so leaving early from the park is better.
Day 8:
From Nyabitaba Hut the trail leads westward for half a kilometer
then drops north right and turning down to the bridge you
begin the Central circuit ( Counter clockwise) Do not be
tempted to take the circuit clockwise since that direction
is much more difficult and adds considerably danger to you
and your potters. Total Time taken from Nyamitaba Hut to
John Matte Hut is 7 hrs. Many hikers consider this the most
tiring and longest day of the circuit so an early start
is recommended.
Day 9:
You leave John Matte Hut to cross the Bujuku River and enter
the lower Bigo Bogs. In the last half of this Bog a board
walk has been constructed. Though some may think it an ugly
intrusion, it makes walking easier and keeps hikers from
further damaging the bog. An hour and beyond after the upper
bog and after climbing through the drier ground and criss-crossing
the river, you reach the Bujuku Lake. The southern part
of the lake is in a majestic setting with Mount Baker to
the south and views west to Mt Stanley and North to Mount
Speke. The trail routes along the Lake’s northeastern
shore crosses the mud on the trip. Beyond the North end
of the lake is a rock shelter called cooking pot and short
distance further is the Bujuku hut (3,962m). Time to reach
Bujuku from John Matte is typically 5hrs. The shaded location
and mists can make Bujuku hut uncomfortably cold.
Day 10:
To continue the circuit, you leave directly west from Bujuku
Hut on a newer trail which rises and falls twice before
finally climbing steeply through magical moss-draped Groundsel
Gully towards 4,372 m Scott Eliot pass. This is steep, rocky
trail which when wet or icy can be slippery. Continuing
and a few steps below the pass there is a sheltered spot
for a break. From here there’s a second trail to the
right to Elena hut. Elena is the base camp for climbing
(16,763ft / 5109m) Margarita Peak in the Mount Stanley complex
which requires an additional day or two and can be attempted
with Ice axe, crampons, ropes and prior arrangements with
RMS guides. The circuit itself continues to the left over
Scott Elliot pass and enter an alpine zone of sparse low
vegetation more familiar to high altitude climbers from
northern latitudes. If the weather is bad here ( snow, rain
and wind can offer at any season, the conditions for “hypothermia”
are ideal. Do not delay your descent to Lake Kitandara below.
The trails descends past upper Kitandara lake to the lower
lake and to Kitandara hut ( 4,023m) Time from Bujuku hut
to Kitandara is usually 5hrs.
Day 11:
An early start is advisable to avoid overheating on the
steep but lovely hour long climb from the lake with freshfeild
pass. Freshfield is a long traverse through beautiful highland
alpine mossy glades until after an hour the trail begins
the circuit’s long two day descent. Mist or rain can
make finding the trail a bit difficult and the first half
mile here can be very slick. Push on to the newly constructed
Guy Yeomen hut (3,261m). Some hikers make the Kitandara
– Guy Yeomen in 5hrs. But all stops to enjoy the pass,
bad weather on descent and slow conditions in the last two
hours can make this a much longer day which some visitors
consider as difficult as day two.
Day 12:
You will probably begin the walk very early if you have
decided to make it all the way to the park Headquarters
and complete your trek. An alternative would be to stay
another night at Nyabitaba Hut. Typical hikers make Guy
– Yeomen to Nyabitaba in 5 hrs should you decide to
continue to the park headquarters, it is another two or
three hours depending on the condition of your knees and
your desire to reach a comfortable bed and bath. Stay the
night overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge. www.mweyalodge.com
